J. Stephen Casscles, Author of “Grapes of the Hudson Valley” and former employee at Benmarl Vineyards (1973-1986) will lead a group discussion on the History of Benmarl Vineyards. This talk will span from A. J. Caywood (1819-1889), who first established the vineyards at Benmarl in 1877 and was a nationally known grape breeder who developed ‘Dutchess’, ‘Ulster”, and ‘Walter’. We will talk of the Caywood descendants who continued to farm this land until it was purchased by the Miller family in 1957, and the Spaccarelli Family who purchased the winery and vineyards in 2006.
In addition, we will discuss how the Mid-Hudson Valley after 1850 was in many respects the “birthplace of American Viticulture” with a large number of grape breeders, horticultural writers, publishers, landscape designers, and nursery owners making their homes and lives here in the Valley. Throughout our discussion, wines made from these Hudson Valley developed heirloom wines and the wines currently made at Benmarl will be served. After our discussion, copies of “Grapes of the Hudson Valley” will be available for sale and signing by the author and Benmarl wines made available for sale.
**We will also be pouring some older cellared wines from our cellar during the presentation**
